How to Feel Closer to God – 5 Easy Ways

As Christians, we should always want to learn how to feel closer to God. There should be a never-ending desire to draw nearer to Him. We long for the day we can meet Him face to face. But in the meantime, as we live here on Earth, there are things we can do to have a deep relationship with our Maker. Today I’m going to talk about 5 Ways to Feel Closer to God.

How to Feel Closer to God

As Christians, there are things that can make us feel separate from God and there are things that can help us draw nearer. Being a Christian first and foremost is about a relationship with God. Our relationship with God is the most important relationship we have, so we must invest in it for it to be fruitful.

1) Don’t Trust Your Feelings

I know this sounds backward, but if you want to feel closer to God you have to stop basing your relationship with Him on your feelings. This is huge. So often the enemy will use our feelings or lack thereof to turn us from God. Maybe it’s been a couple of days and you don’t “feel” that closeness. Does that mean you stop pushing into Him? No, not at all. Sometimes the Lord does “go quiet” to strengthen our faith.

Yes, it’s easy to follow Him when you’re on an emotional high. But will you continue to seek Him when that feeling fades? Will you trust in His Word and know that He is with us always? Feelings move like the wind, our foundation should be in Christ and our trust should be in His word.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Hebrews 11:6

2) Don’t Inhibit the Relationship with Sin

If I’m talking to you Christian to Christian, I’m not talking about salvation here. But, a perfect God can not commune with sin. Does this mean we have to be perfect to approach Him? No, that is why Christ died for us, hallelujah! I have sin issues I struggle with daily and I’m sure you do too. However, when we are actively choosing to sin, chase after sin, or stop trying to resist sin than we will feel distant from God until we repent and turn.

For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.

Hebrews 10:26-27

3) Go Where God Goes

This is similar to number 2, but worth noting separately. When I first got saved I was still trying to live the life I formerly lived. I was going to clubs, bars, and parties. I wasn’t getting trashed anymore so it’s fine right?

Well, I quickly realized that if I truly wanted to follow Jesus, I had to go where He goes. How can I feel closer to God if I’m nowhere near Him? I wasn’t going to find Him in a club, so why would I go there?

When I finally stopped trying to live in this world, my walk became much more fruitful. And let me tell you, the joy I feel from attending a woman’s bible study far surpasses the feelings I use to have about going to a bar.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

James 4:8

4) Set Aside Time with God

Think about any relationship you have. If you aren’t spending set aside time with that person then you’re going to have a weak relationship. So if you want to get closer to God, you have to spend time with Him. Think about what it would be like if you only saw your husband once a week on Sundays at a crowded event. Wouldn’t it be hard to have a deep relationship with Him? It’s the exact same with God. It’s important to set aside time to get alone and talk to your God, worship Him, pray to Him, and read His Word in the Bible. Not just once a week, but as many times a day as you can.

When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 63:6-8

5) Text God throughout the Day

Ok not literally, guys. But just as it’s important to set aside time with God, it’s also important to think about Him and converse with Him throughout your day. Never let the conversation end. Think about when you are far from your friends or husband. You text them. You text them when you see something funny. You text them when you need help. You text them when you miss them. We continually talk to the ones we love, it should be the exact same with our Maker.

Yes, it’s important to have that set-aside time with God that I mention above. But it’s also great to pray in the car, worship Him while you do dishes, or even send up SOS prayers when you’re struggling with your temper. There’s never a bad time to send your thoughts upwards towards your Heavenly Father.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
